But what if do you want to become a florist but don’t know where to start and what for this? Let's try to solve this problem.

How to become a florist, where to start an independent study of the profession

Why start on your ownto study a specialty florist - Of course from books on floristry. I can advise, for example, this one - Floristic painting. Pictures of flowers and leaves with their own hands. But, honestly, if you don’t have a “divine gift”, it would be a good idea to become at least an aspiring florist short coursesbasics of floristry. Such courses last about two weeks. There you learn to handle flowers correctly, and also learn all about the most common floristic techniques.

But basically floristic courses are, of course, a practice. Work with flowers begins on the first day and lasts daily, almost all days. Thus, you are completely immersed in the profession. Listen carefully to yourself at these moments and never be upset, do not give up if you do not succeed. Few people get it the first time, or even the tenth. In order to become a professional florist ten thousand hours to practice! And only then you will surely succeed.

If you feel that you are bored and not interested, then most likely floristry is not yours and you better find yourself another hobby. After completing the courses, you definitely need to start practicing the acquired skills. For this you can get a job as an assistant floristIf you study somewhere, you can get a part-time job. On the Internet, in floristic forums you can often find vacancies for 1-2 days a week.

It is also very cool to take part in the design of various events. People for a particular design are so often sought on floristic forums on the Internet. Participating in the design of various events is a great opportunity to work with different colors, using various techniques, finally show off your floristic works to someone else, except for your family members. Be sure to visit flower exhibitions and master classes from professional florists. Master classes in floristry are of course paid, but the exhibitions will give you new ideas and inspiration for free.

Let us single out several professions that are present on the labor market as real vacancies:

Florist seller - sells finished bouquets or prepares sample bouquets based on samples.

Florist-designer - invents and creates bouquets and compositions.

Florist decorator - arranges holidays, events with the help of floral arrangements.

Phytodesigner - engaged in landscaping, creating winter gardens. It differs from the decorator or designer in that it is engaged not only in decoration, but also in improving the environmental situation, combines plants in accordance with their biological compatibility.

Types of floristry

Some masters choose one direction, develop in it and achieve success. Universal masters can work in several in order to increase the possibility of earning. Consider the most popular of them:

What does the florist do?

Florist's specialty - both art and practical work with flowers as a natural material. There are a lot of applications here: interior design (this is usually done by a florist decorator), wedding celebrations, flower arranging, window dressing and even car decoration.

Today there are a lot of florist vacancies in Russia, but the specialty is taught mainly in private schools or courses - in public educational institutions this direction is very poorly developed. More specifically about where they are taught to be a florist, we will tell in other articles.

It is interesting to note that in Europe (especially in Holland and Germany) this specialty is widespread, and the training period is about 5 years.
Some people study floristry on their own, but a florist without experience is not very simple, since a lack of theoretical knowledge and classical foundations sometimes interferes with rapid professional growth, but it is also possible to achieve high professional results. You can start a career with work as an assistant florist.

Both men and women can work in this area, but it is believed that this is the predominant male specialty. Complex and difficult physically, it is not suitable for all women. So, at the world championships in floristry, the percentage of women is only about 25% of the total number of participants.

One of the most important qualities of both professional and novice florist - a passion for his work, a complete immersion in the field of activity when flowers are not just a working material and tool, but the whole world in which he lives. Only such an attitude allows us not to “fade away”, to develop, to learn new things, to see prospects and horizons, and to create real works of art. Other important qualities necessary for a florist are hard work, patience and accuracy, because flowers require very careful care. And the most desirable specialty for a florist is biology, botany. Do not forget that, of course, artistic taste is of great importance.

Is the profession in demand? Yes, of course. Like any high-class specialists, there are very few really good florists. In order to become a true professional in your field, you need to spend a lot of effort and gain experience. It is important to note that today Russian specialists participate in many international competitions, taking prizes.

Florist Jobs - flower shops, design studios, companies involved in the design of celebrations and holidays, etc. The most important criterion for hiring is a portfolio, a list of skills and achievements.

Wreath of flowers

Career growth provides not only continuous professional development, but also international Florist Cups, which are held around the world. Winners receiving high ratings can count on good jobs and expensive orders.

  • Nervous work: interaction with many customers, some of which may be demanding and even capricious
  • A large amount of work: the flowers should be fresh and well-groomed
  • Great physical activity: it is often necessary to lift heavy tanks, carry boxes and boxes with fertilizers or flowers.
  • High risk of exacerbation of chronic allergic diseases - many plants can cause contact allergies

If these difficulties didn’t scare you, let's move on to the pros:

I became a florist by accident

Good day! My name is Anna Poznyakova, I'm 22 years old. I live and work in the city of Kirov. I have been working as a florist for more than a year in one of the large flower salons “Bouquet Workshop”. I became a florist and got there by accident, but I am very glad that everything happened just like that.

Who is a florist and how to become one

Florist is a creative and very interesting profession, the essence of which is to create bouquets and floral arrangements. In addition, the duties of the florist may include the design of gifts and interiors.

Having figured out who the florists are, it’s worth saying a few words that this profession, although creative, is still quite difficult and not suitable for everyone.

What qualities are needed to become a florist?

The first quality necessary for a florist is, of course, a love of flowers. You must love their appearance, smell and, of course, you should not be allergic to them. You also need knowledge about the flowers, the conditions of their maintenance, and compatibility, because some flowers, such as a daffodil, secrete mucus, which negatively affects the rest of the flowers in the bouquet. Still need to master floristic techniques and techniques, which believe me a lot.

You should not be afraid to experiment and try new techniques, color combinations, styles and trends. For a florist, artistic taste is very important, which can be developed in the process of mastering the profession of a florist. It is also very important to love people, because you try for them. Your mood is always reflected in the bouquet and the buyer, so create in a good mood.

And, of course, the main engine in mastering the profession of florist is the desire to grow and develop. You should draw information from various sources, whether it be the Internet, books or exhibitions. And if you want to design holidays, then you need the ability to draw and mastery of Photoshop. This is certainly not a hollow list of qualities and abilities that you need to possess in order to become a florist, but only the main ones.

What tools are needed to become a florist.

Most often, florists use tools that can be found in ordinary hardware stores. For example, banal pliers and wire cutters to bite or bend the wire. But also necessary and special floristic materials, such as floristic foam, in order to fix the flowers in the composition, special flower pins and wire, floristic ribbon, pruning shears, soda scissors and glue for fresh flowers.

With it, you can create jewelry, such as tiaras, necklaces, bracelets. Compositions of artificial flowers, dried flowers and other materials are made using a glue gun. Also, florists can use improvised materials: paper, gypsum, cones and many others.

In general, floristry is pure creativity and in it you can create a picture that is pleasing to the eye out of nothing, as for me the best future profession that brings not only income, but also job satisfaction cannot be found. Becoming a florist is a realistic dream for an ordinary person.

Salaries of florists

The average salary of a florist in Russia is low, according to

Most floral designers earn on average about 30 thousand rubles. Florist sellers followed by a salary of 25 thousand rubles, assistant florists with a salary of 22 thousand. Decorators and wedding florists were in the bottom position, either because of the seasonality of their work, or because the data on them was more difficult to track.

It should be noted that the rating does not take into account the part-time jobs that many florists arrange.

Florist is a sought-after profession, dozens of vacancies can be found on job search sites, the most common being a sales assistant.

Pros and cons of working as a florist

As in any specialty, floristry has its positive and negative points.

Pros of working as a florist:

  • Creative implementation.
  • Demand.
  • The opportunity to earn money or organize your own business.

Cons of working as a florist:

  • To preserve colors, you often have to work at low temperatures.
  • Have to wear heavy things.
  • Irregular working hours: work from early morning to late evening (schedule 2/2).
  • The probability of being stuck in the position of the seller and making the same type of bouquets.

Carier start

To work as an assistant florist, completion of courses or training in the salon is enough. Become a florist will help you experience and constant study of the flower and plant assortment, new techniques for composing bouquets and compositions, tracking trends.

Some salons indicate the completion of floristry courses as a prerequisite, some as an advantage when choosing a candidate for the position of assistant florist. Even without education, you can get a job in a flower shop where they provide training for employees, but choosing a job will be much more modest.

Before taking the courses, we recommend that you go through several workshops on creating bouquets and make sure that you really like the florist's craft.

How to put together a portfolio

Portfolio can be collected, studying at courses or studying at work. The advantage of the first option is that you will have the opportunity to make compositions and bouquets in different styles. Plus the second option - you do not have to pay for it, but not the fact that the employer will be interested in your creative development, and not aimed at creating the same type of commercial bouquets.

If you have already learned the basics of floristry - you can be inspired by the work of experienced masters, repeat and come up with their own compositions based on them.

Personal experience

Anastasia Egorova, founder of Ryabina flower workshops (St. Petersburg), florist blogger and expert:

“I wanted to become a veterinarian, but at some point I realized that it wasn’t mine and dropped out of school. What I just did not do: stretch ceilings, professional cosmetics for spas, jewelry, rental real estate, design panels, worked as a waitress, manager of staff training.

Once I walked past a flower shop, I saw an announcement that an evening seller was required. At that moment, I was just looking for a second job, so I got a job there.

I studied in the store to create simple compositions. There she became an advertising manager, was engaged in development: came up with promotions, created advertisements.

My passion for floristry began from the opposite: at first I just wanted my flower shop. About how cool, beautiful and unusual to do flowers, I realized at my next job. I got a job as an assistant to a cool florist, a master of international level.

I studied at the workplace: I got the basics in the first, and developed as a professional florist in the second. Fortunately, there were opportunities for this: my boss was actively involved in teaching, so I took part in endless seminars, master classes, and projects. Every day, the whole team learned something new. ”

Tips from Anastasia Egorova for beginners:

  • Learn the base: spirals, the basics of composition, color, working with a floral sponge (foam).
  • Set landmarks: keep an eye on the craftsmen whose style you like. It is better to develop in one direction, to be a narrow specialist. Without this, you can get stuck for a long time, arranging bouquets in a stall. After that, it will be too difficult to retrain.

Not sure if floristry is yours? Not enough inspiration to create new bouquets and compositions? We offer you to be inspired by floristic master classes by Anastasia Egorova in video format. Learn new things at a convenient time and in a comfortable environment.

Necessary skills and knowledge for work

In order to become a florist, it is important to have creative thinking, to be patient and ready for the fact that you will have to work hard and hard with your hands, creating beautiful compositions, bouquets for birthday parties and brides every day. In addition, the florist, like any other seller, must be able to communicate with people, find their own unique approach to each, and be stress-resistant.

To work as a florist, you need to know the features of flowers, the rules for caring for them, and be able to combine colors.

Of course, in order to work as a florist, you need to know the features of flowers, the rules for caring for them. It is important to be able to combine colors. The so-called “watchfulness” plays a significant role in this. For example, in the salon we often watch the work of other florists on the Internet, we monitor what color combinations are relevant now, what design of bouquets is most popular today. Of course, this all comes with work experience.

You can learn the basics of floristry in courses

As far as I know, higher education institutions do not teach florist, but there are many special courses. Some of them last for several days, others can take several months. At the end of these courses, a certificate is issued.

These books are available to all comers. There is also a huge amount of information on the Internet, so getting the necessary information for a novice florist is not difficult.

Work as a florist. How to start, what to do

Starting to work as a florist is not as easy as it might seem at first. Most employers are looking for florists who already have work experience. But to get work experience is not always possible. If you have been trained in special courses in floristry, have some basic knowledge, understand colors and know how to collect at least the simplest round bouquet, the employer can take you for a trial period. Getting a job without any skills and knowledge is extremely difficult. However, in my case it all happened that way.

By acquaintance, I was hired by a flower salon, and already there I began to get the necessary knowledge and work out the assembly of bouquets, learned how to create compositions.

Passing a creative job at an interview

When applying for a job as a florist, most likely, they will give you some kind of creative task to check how creative you have been developed and whether you can create something unique and, importantly, beautiful. Some employers ask for a men's or wedding bouquet.

If you don’t know how to collect bouquets, you may be asked to simply pick up flowers from which you would start to collect this or that bouquet.

When I got a job, I was given the task of arranging one rose. At my disposal were all the necessary tools, decorative elements, ribbons and more. After several hours of painstaking work, the rose was framed, and I was offered to go to work the next day.

When I got a job, I was given the task of arranging one rose.

Internship and development in the profession

In the course of the internship, senior masters help to deal with new techniques for assembling bouquets, their packaging and design, telling all the nuances of working with visitors. During the work you will learn a lot of new things, which is undoubtedly a big plus for the florist.

As an intern, who, in fact, is simply an assistant to the main florist in the salon, you can expect a salary of about 10-15 thousand, depending on the salon and the city. For the first month I received no more than 12 thousand rubles.

When I joined the work of the florist, I began to learn how to collect bouquets of brides and boutonnieres, and later began to engage in the decoration of rooms for various events.

As elsewhere, the longer you work, the more experienced you become. Therefore, your number of responsibilities is growing and, accordingly, your earnings are increasing. When I joined the work of a florist and I could easily assemble a simple bouquet, I began to learn how to collect bouquets of brides and boutonnieres, later I began to work on decorating the premises for various events.

Work difficulties

As I already said, the work of a florist is actually much more difficult than it seems at first glance, I will explain why:

  1. The flowers are quite heavy, and therefore picking up large bulk bouquets is not easy,
  2. Flowerpots with waterthat store flowers in the refrigerator also weigh decently. On a day, such flowerpots have to be collected several dozen times,
  3. In the cold season it’s impossible to keep warm in the roombecause you have to constantly go into the refrigerator for flowers,
  4. Flowers are delivered to the store in huge heavy boxes,
  5. When receiving flowers hands turn green, and then it’s not easy to wash them,
  6. You can forget what a manicure is.,
  7. Anyway, this is work with people. It is important for everyone to find their own special approach, otherwise a conflict may arise.

Flowers are delivered to the store in heavy boxes.

Case Studies

I understood the complexity of the work on the day when the bride came to our salon. Having described the bouquet that she wants to receive on her wedding day, having decided on the color scheme, we began to select flowers that would be part of the bouquet. Fresh flowers are delivered on Wednesdays, but the girl did not want to hear anything; she needed a bouquet of fresh flowers on Tuesday.

Leaving attempts to convey something to her, I suggested choosing from the available colors (fortunately, we have a very large selection, and something else remained), to which the girl replied with a categorical refusal.

As a result, no matter how much I tried to work out her objections, I could not find an approach to her. The bride left without a bouquet, I was left without an order.

Of course, there are some very interesting points. For example, once a bride came to us as well, with whom we quickly picked up a bouquet. The only thing she could not choose was a satin ribbon. There was no suitable shade in our salon. The girl was not taken aback, she went to the sewing accessories store, brought us the ribbon that she would like to see in her bouquet, and everyone was satisfied. It is nice that such visitors are much more common.

Brides are usually the most finicky clients.

How much can you earn

Salary is largely dependent on the salon. For example, in small stalls the payment is much lower than in large prestigious salons, this is obvious. Also, wages vary by city.

I will tell you by example. As an intern, I earned no more than 12 thousand per month. It turned out because I received only a salary, and full-fledged master florists received a salary and a percentage of personal sales. Now I, like them, receive a salary and a percentage, so the payment has increased significantly. In our salon, personal sales are taken into account, so it is important how many bouquets you made and sold.

The salary in our salon is white, for good work (for example, if the plan for the month is overfulfilled) bonuses are awarded. We work with a full social package, which is undoubtedly a huge plus.

Holiday periods are the most profitable

It is important to consider that during the holidays, flower sales grow significantly. So, for example, recently we were preparing for Teacher's Day. Many bouquets of the autumn (red-yellow-red) palette were specially prepared. By September 1, bouquets were created with school attributes, for example, the frame for the bouquet was a triangle ruler. Therefore, during the holiday periods, revenue is greater, and therefore wages will be greater.

Now, on average, my salary is 25-30 thousand rubles. The biggest salary was in March, when everyone massively bombarded their girls, mothers and grandmothers with tulips. Almost 40 thousand rubles came out that month, which is quite good for our city.

Is it worth it to start working as a florist

To summarize, for myself, I highlighted both the positive and negative aspects of the work of a florist. From the positive aspects:

  1. Interesting creative work,
  2. Good salary,
  3. Wonderful working conditions. It's nice to be surrounded by flowers all day
  4. There is always something to do. Agree, when there is work, then time flies faster,
  5. Joyful visitors.

Of course, it is in our salon that the staff, bosses, prizes, corporate events and other organizational issues also make me happy.

Of the minuses of work I can highlight as a florist great physical activitythat not everyone can stand.

In general, working as a florist is very interesting. If you have a creative beginning and you want to become a master florist, I can advise you to start small: read various literature on this topic. If you study and improve, then you will definitely succeed in becoming a wonderful florist!
