Useful Tips

Computer is slow

If you notice that the computer began to work more slowly than usual (it loads slowly, documents open for a long time or programs run slowly), then most likely device needs diagnostics and cleaning.

In this article we will try to understand the causes and find solutions to this problem.

How to find out if there is enough memory on a computer

RAM (from Random Access Memory), or random access memory, is also called temporary storage memory of a computer. This memory is used by various programs. The computer must have enough RAM to handle all tasks. Otherwise, this can seriously slow down the system during boot or task processing.

If your computer worked normally before installing any programs, and then slowed down, most likely, your system requires additional RAM. In addition, if the computer slows down every time you work with large files, you need to add additional RAM.

Temporary hard drive files

If you often have to leave the computer turned on for a long time, with open programs or other running processes, this can lead to the creation of temporary files on the disk and slow down the computer.

Removing temporary files, including Internet history, cookies, will free up space on your hard drive for work.

How to delete temporary files in Windows 10

To delete temporary files in Windows 10, on the taskbar, select Disk Cleanup (Disk cleanup):

In section Files to delete (Files to delete) select the files you want to get rid of. If you want to describe the type of file, just select it in the list. Then click OKto save changes:

Defragment your hard drive in Windows 10

Another way to speed up your computer is to defragment your hard drive.
To do this, run the disk optimization tool by searching defragmentation (defrag) or on the taskbar:

In the window that opens, select your hard drive and click Analyze (Analyze):

In the list of results, check the percentage of fragmented files. It is recommended to have this indicator less than 5%. However, this is not a clear rule, and you can choose a different standard.

If you want to defragment your disk, click Optimization (Optimize) After the process is complete, your percentage of fragmented files should be 0.

How to delete temporary files in Windows XP

To delete temporary files, open My computer (My computer) and select the local drive (usually drive C) Choose folder Windows and find the folder in it Temp. Right-click on the folder, and in the options View (View) select In detail (Details) Then delete all files that are older than the current date.

After deleting the files, restart the computer.

If the computer is infected

If the computer is infected with a virus, malware, worm or trojan, this can slow down the system and even block some tasks.

If you notice that the slowdown appeared suddenly, accompanied by a very long download and, possibly, a change in the appearance of programs and documents or the untimely opening of any advertisement, these are signs of any infections in your car.

We recommend that you post the issue in Viruses / Security CCM forum where you will receive help on each individual issue.

Direct memory access (DMA) is disabled (for Windows 7)

Direct memory access allows data to be transferred between the hard drive and the CD-ROM without the need for microprocessor intervention. But sometimes, as for Windows XP, this option is not installed by default.

To enable it manually, click Start (Start) > Control Panel (Control panel) > System (System) > Equipment (Hardware) > device Manager (Device manager).

View options ATA/ATAPIclicking icon + next to everyone. Select Primary IDE Channel (Primary IDE Channel,), and in the window Key IDE Features go to tab Extra options. Check if transfer mode is enabled for devices 0 and 1 DMA. Click OKto confirm the changes.

Do the same for Secondary Channel IDE (Secondary IDE Channel) Check if device transfer mode is enabled 0 and devices 1 DMA.

Removing dust from a computer

And finally, a simple, but no less important stage is to clean the computer literally from dust, which can also affect the operation of the entire system.

It is recommended to completely remove dust from the computer case at least once a year to prevent overheating of some elements, such as computer fans.

Before doing this, completely unplug your computer. Wait about fifteen minutes before starting cleaning, as rapid changes in temperature can damage the processor.

When cleaning the device, it is best to use a can of compressed air specially designed for this purpose. Carefully follow the instructions on the packaging to prevent accidentally spraying liquid onto your computer.

Please note that it is not recommended to use a brush or brush for this work, as it can damage fragile parts of the internal processor device.

1. Check your computer for viruses

Viruses can run their processes, which lead to system brakes. You can check your computer using the CureIt utility or any other equivalent.

You can also temporarily (or permanently) install 360 Total Security antivirus and perform a regular scan - the program will offer to delete not only suspicious files, but also to clear startup and temporary data:

We agree, after we restart the computer.

We also make sure that several anti-virus products are not installed in the system - otherwise, they will conflict and create additional unnecessary load.

2. Check the status of the HDD / SSD

a) Physical condition:

Install the utility to check the hard disk and display the status of S.M.A.R.T., for example, HD Tune or CrystalDiskInfo. In the event that errors or warnings are detected, media must be replaced.

The condition should be close to 100%, otherwise, the disk may cause poor performance:

b) Free space:

Among other things, you need to make sure you have disk space:

If there is not enough space, the system will slow down.

c) Logical state:

Also sometimes, checking the disk for logical errors helps.

Conventional hard disks can fragment over time (files are scattered throughout the disk), which is why the read head has to run to different parts of the disk “pancake” and collect data piece by piece. Of course, this leads to a decrease in the response speed of the disk system. To defragment a disk, use the built-in utility or Defraggler program.

If when viewing the computer’s load, the drive constantly shows 100% load, you can try to disable the page file. Read the article in more detail. The disk is 100% loaded. If you need to have a swap file, set static values (the same for maximum and minimum - this will exclude its fragmentation):

3. Install / update drivers

The problem is less relevant, starting with Windows 10, since the latter can automatically update drivers (if connected to the Internet), but does not exclude the possibility of a problem.

And so, the lack of a driver for the device or the presence of a version with an error can lead to improper operation of the equipment and, as a result, to any problems, in particular, the slow speed of the PC.

Go to the device manager (command devmgmt.msc or right click on This computer in the conductor - Control - device Manager) Drivers must be installed for all devices (there should be no exclamation points):

You can install or update drivers manually by downloading the latest versions from the manufacturer’s website or in automatic mode using a special program, for example, DriverHub.

4. Turn off visual effects

With poor graphics performance, it is worth trying to disable all the prettiness of Windows.

We go in Control Panel - system and safety - System - click on Additional system parameters:

Tab Additionally in the "Performance" section, click on Options - in the window that opens, put the switch in position Provide the best performance.:

5. Check running processes

Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) - in the window that opens, you can see the utilization of equipment in a percentage ratio:

If the computer resources are completely full (90% and higher), you need to find the processes that do this. This information can be seen in the same task manager, but specialized utilities, such as Process Explorer, will show more detailed information.

Download the program from the link above, unpack the archive and run it as administrator:

We accept the license agreement - the main program window opens with the processes running on the computer and information about the resources they occupy.

Sort the list of processor utilization:

* System idle process shows a simple processor (free resource). The higher this indicator, the better.

We sort the list by memory utilization (actually allocated pages, excluding shared):

Sort the list by memory utilization (the sum of all pages of memory):

If there are processes that load the system, try to nail them:

If the computer starts to work quickly, use the built-in msconfig (“Startup” tab) or the Autoruns utility to disable this process from startup. Also read how to disable autorun programs.

However, when trying to stop the process svchost we get the error:

Here you need to act differently. We hover over the name of the process - a pop-up window appears with a list of services that hang on this process:

We open Windows services - in turn we stop services and we look, whether computer performance has improved. If we find a service due to which the computer is running slowly, turn off its autostart or try to determine the cause of the problem.

6. Disable startup programs and clean the computer from garbage and unnecessary programs

The presence of a large number of processes adversely affects system performance. To disable unnecessary programs from startup, read the instructions How to disable startup programs.

  • we clean the computer from temporary files. There are various utilities for this, for example, CCleaner.
  • clean the registry. The safest thing to do is the aforementioned CCleaner.
  • remove programs and games that we no longer use. You need to do this using the "Programs and Features" tool, or, again, CCleaner.

In new computers with pre-installed Windows, especially on laptops, the manufacturer / seller considers it their duty to install all the programs in the world. Removing this “necessary” software can cause the computer to start loading and working more than 2 times better!

If the new Lenovo laptop is running slowly, update or remove the preinstalled antivirus.

7. Testing RAM

This is another component that, for frequent, is a source of performance problems.

You can test memory in various ways:

  1. If there are several brackets in the computer, we pull everything out, leaving one. Testing and rearranging to another bar.
  2. We use a special utility, for example, memtest86.
  3. We are trying to insert memory into different slots on the motherboard.

If problems are found, we will hand over the memory as a guarantee or exchange it for a new one. You need to buy the same bar as the rest or get acquainted with the motherboard compatibility sheet.

9. We evaluate the operation of the power supply and electrical outlets

Not always obvious, but the real problem is the lack of power supply for the normal operation of the components.

There are several approaches to testing this theory:

  1. Take the computer to a different power source, possibly a different room.
  2. Replace power supply.
  3. Use diagnostic utilities, such as AIDA64.

On laptops, when running on battery power, the system can run slower to save power. In this case, we connect the portable device to a power source or change the power mode from economical to efficient.

10. Configure the power scheme

By default, Windows uses a balanced power scheme. This is not always the best solution for performance.

To change the power scheme, open the Windows Settings and enter “power” in the search - select Choosing a Power Management Scheme:

In the window that opens, open the hidden option by clicking on Show additional schemes - in the menu that opens, select High performance:

* if we see that the switch is set to the "Energy Saving" position, it is worth trying to switch to Balanced.

11. We look at the temperature

Overheating can cause poor performance - the system will run slower to prevent the possibility of combustion of components.

To see the current temperature of the main components, you can use the above AIDA64 or SpeedFan.

If the fact of overheating is detected, you must perform the following steps (not recommended for warranty computers):

  1. Disassemble the computer and clean it from dust.
  2. Depending on the overheating component:
    • Remove the processor cooler, remove the remnants of thermal grease, apply a new thermal grease and put the cooler in place.
    • Remove the video card cooler, remove the remnants of thermal grease, apply a new thermal grease and put the cooler in place.
  3. In the case of a desktop computer, put a cooler that works by blowing hot air out of the case.
  4. Check the operation of all fans (visually and using a program, for example, SpeedFan).

12. Checking peripherals

Poorly working or beginning to fail peripherals can lead to problems with the computer itself.

Turn off all devices except the mouse. We take out the CD-ROM from the drive, if any. We check the performance of the computer. Turn off the mouse, connect the keyboard, continue the test. If the computer works well without peripherals, we connect additional devices one at a time to determine which problem it is with.

13. Network Issues / Slow Internet

Software can be installed in the system, the operation of which is highly dependent on the network. If there is a network connection, but no network as such (for example, due to a logical error), these programs may try to send requests with high timeouts (waiting for a response). Moreover, at the time of waiting, they create a strong load on the system, slowing down its operation. This, most often, leads to a deterioration in computer loading or attempts to run various programs.

In this case, try pulling out the network cable or disconnecting WiFi. If the problem is resolved, try to deal with the network - this may be a temporary failure or the firewall is not working properly.

If, by itself, the computer works satisfactorily, but the speed of the Internet is low, measure it using the appropriate article. If the speed is poor, try disconnecting the cable from the router and plug it directly into the computer - if the speed remains low, contact the service provider. Otherwise, try connecting the computer to the router by wire, and not via WiFi. If it does not help, reconfigure the router or replace it - quite often, the transition to the frequency of 5 GHz helps.

14. Make sure that the power of the computer meets the system requirements

With poor performance during the launch of certain programs or games, and also, after changing Windows to a newer version, it is worth examining the system requirements of these software products. It is possible that the computer should not work quickly with them.

If the problem occurs with only one specific program / game, try reinstalling it.

If the computer used to work fast with the same program / game, try to analyze and then problems begin. Also, try to disable the antivirus program before starting.

We monitor the number of simultaneously running programs. In some cases, a browser with a large number of open tabs + office programs may be launched on the computer. Each process requires resources. It is also worth knowing that each open browser tab is a separate process. We must monitor the number of open programs and close everything that we don’t use, otherwise, buy a more powerful computer.

If our computer has less than 4 GB of RAM and we do not plan to expand, do not install 64-bit Windows - it consumes a bit more resources. If more than 4 GB - install Windows x64, otherwise, all resources will not be used. This is also true for the choice of the system edition: it is not necessary to install the maximum possible Windows, it is not a fact that all the features will be involved, and resources will be wasted.

15. We use specialized software

There are utilities that can analyze your PC and report possible performance issues. One of these utilities is Auslogics BoostSpeed.

The evaluation process will begin, which can take up to 10 minutes - wait, after we get the results, for example:

* In this example, it can be seen that the weakest component is the video card. This computer should comfortably solve office tasks, but it will slow down when you start demanding games. The maximum score is 7.9 points.

b) Windows 10/8:

Starting with Windows 8, a performance index score is launched from the command line. To do this, open it as administrator and enter the command:

winsat formal -restart clean

We are waiting for the end of the process. After we open the folder Windows Performance WinSAT DataStore. In the list that opens, select the last file by date in whose name there is Formal.Assessment (Recent) .WinSAT.xml and open it using any browser:

We are interested in the tag Winspr:

For convenience, you can download a utility that allows you to see the rating in a convenient form - Winaero WEI Tool. Download, unpack, run:

* Please note that the maximum score is 9.9 points.

I also mention that in addition to the built-in tools, there are other utilities. For example, the free WhySoSlow.

17. We study the system log

Based on the entries in the system log, you can try to draw conclusions regarding the operation of the PC. It is possible this will help solve the problem.

The magazine can be opened with the command eventvwr or from the control panel.

It is necessary to pay attention to all errors and warnings, first of all, for system events:

18. Trying to disable hibernation

If the hibernation file is damaged, the computer will wake up with lags for several minutes. To solve the problem, turn off the power saving mode, restart the computer, turn on the mode again.

To do this, open the command line as administrator and enter:

Reboot the computer. Return hibernation mode:

20. Reinstall Windows

If all else fails, reinstalling the system remains. This is not the best way to solve the problem and you need to resort to it only as a last resort.

Perhaps you should try to roll back the system using a checkpoint at the time when the computer was working properly. And, if this does not help, copy the important data to another medium or to the cloud, and reinstall the operating system.

This extreme measure can be caused by various problems:

  1. The presence of a system error, which is very difficult to understand even for a highly qualified specialist.
  2. The curve for installing updates.
  3. Accumulated for years garbage after installing / uninstalling various programs.
  4. Single or multiple overflow of the system disk by 87.5%. The problem is related to the feature of the NTFS file system to reserve 12.5% of the space for the MFT (which are necessary for the normal operation of the file system itself). When the place runs out, the system takes 12.5% of the reserved space from the MFT, which can lead to fragmentation of the latter. Defragmentation will no longer help.

On average, in my experience, the life of the Windows operating system is from 2 to 5 years.

22. Change the computer

In the case when even reinstalling Windows and all of the above did not help to solve the problem, and the computer continues to work slowly, it is time to change the computer itself.

Firstly, over the years, the physical properties of components deteriorate due to the appearance of microcracks and oxidation of contacts, and secondly, the software becomes more demanding and there is a need to increase capacity.

On average, the life of a computer is from 3 to 7 years.

How to speed up your computer

This topic deserves a separate article, therefore, as part of this problem, we briefly present a step-by-step action plan to improve PC performance.

Before increasing the speed, we carry out all the steps above - we are convinced of the absence of any problems that impede fast work. After you can follow these tips:

  1. We use the computer intelligently:
    • Do not run a large number of programs at the same time unnecessarily. Not infrequently, on a braking computer, you can see a browser with the 1000th open tabs and office documents. Resources are not rubber and it is worth closing programs that we do not use.
    • We do not install everything in a row on a computer. We carefully install the programs (often, they offer to install additional utilities or other programs) - we refuse and put only what we will use.
    • From time to time, remove software that is no longer used.
  2. We set up automatic cleaning of the computer from temporary files, for example, using the CCleaner program.
  3. We do a full scan of the computer for viruses and clean everything that the program finds.
  4. Disable from startup all that we do not use.
  5. With slow disk performance, Readyboost can be tuned. This is a technology for software caching to a flash drive.
  6. Disable unnecessary Windows services. However, for each user these are their “unnecessary” services, since disabling them leads to the loss of some functionality. Before disconnecting, it is recommended to study what each of the services is responsible for and to draw an appropriate conclusion. Also, it is worth using the Process Explorer program to find svchost for her to see if the service consumes a lot of resources and whether it should be turned off.

If the software methods did not increase the speed to the desired result, upgrade to your computer. If you use a regular HDD, replacing it with an SSD will give a decent performance boost.

Diagnostics, search for an application loading a PC

And so, everything worked fine for you, and suddenly. the computer began to work slowly for no reason. First of all, I recommend paying attention to:

  1. what programs were running before the computer started to slow down,
  2. in which cases does the PC slow down? For example, when loading the OS, when copying files, when working in a browser, etc. All these cases are discussed in my article below,
  3. Be sure to check the task manager: see if it shows applications that load the processor by 30% or more, if the hard disk, RAM, network are overloaded. Note: to call the task manager, press the key combination Ctrl + Shift + Esc,

Task Manager: processes are sorted by CPU load (processor)

If you find any application that heavily loads the CPU, disk, memory - try closing it. If the task manager is fine and there seems to be no applications that load the PC, but it still slows down, try using third-party applications, for example, Advanced systemcare . It has a performance monitor in its arsenal (displayed by default in the upper right corner on the desktop). Download the utility and read the full description - you can here:

Download bar (monitor integrated in Advanced SystemCare)

In addition to Advanced SystemCare, in order to check and find applications that load your PC, I recommend trying Process explorer (to download the program and see a description of working with it, click on the link below, in the article about the CPU load, see a little below).

If the brakes are related to the CPU load, I recommend that you read the article:

If you have occupied almost all of the RAM according to the dispatcher, try to free it, configure the swap file (by the way, you need to pay special attention to this if you still get errors like “Not enough memory.”). About cleaning RAM - you can read here:

If the reasons for the brakes are related to the hard drive (for example, its loading is 100%), and closed applications didn’t help (the load is there anyway, or the system processes that cannot be closed load), I recommend that you first read this article: https: / /

If your PC is unreasonably (at first glance) slowing down (or it is heavily loaded by system processes) - it may well be that you picked up a virus (by the way, if the computer is infected with viruses or adware - brakes and slow operation can be in any applications) .

Therefore, I recommend checking your computer for viruses and removing them (if any): (by the way, I will not return to viruses in this article anymore).

Slow operation of Windows OS, poor responsiveness

Perhaps this is the most common complaint: it seems that after reinstalling Windows, the computer “flies”, but over time it starts to respond more slowly and slowly, and now the applications open somehow reluctantly, for a long time, etc.

This is mainly due to the fact that Windows accumulates a large amount of "garbage" that needs to be cleaned from time to time. Add to this the erroneous lines in the system registry, broken shortcuts, an overgrown browser cache, “tails” left over from old long-deleted programs.

How to clean your computer from garbage (here are a couple of links):

The best utilities for comprehensive cleaning of a laptop, computer -

Cleaning your computer from junk files in manual and auto mode -

After the hard drive is cleared of everything superfluous, I recommend that you defragment your hard drive (unless, of course, you have a new-fangled SSD). This operation will increase the speed of access to files on the disk. You can learn more about the "mechanism" and the principle of its operation at

For maximum acceleration of the Windows OS - it is recommended to perform its optimization (customization for yourself, for your needs and requirements). This topic is quite extensive, below is a link to one of my articles, I recommend it to be done (relevant for Windows 10, 8, 7).

When booting Windows

Every fifth program that you install (or maybe more) prescribes itself in startup (i.e., it starts and loads into the PC’s memory along with the boot of your Windows). For example, ICQ, Skype, uTorrent, image editors, etc. As a rule, most users do not even pay attention to it (for the time being, for the time being).

Take the same uTorrent - if you have a couple of hundred torrents in it, then it may take a minute to check all of them and download the program (in addition, there will be a high load on the hard disk that will affect the responsiveness of your PC).

The solution in this case:

  1. Set up startup, control it from time to time, remove applications from it that you do not need every time you turn on your PC,
  2. Brakes, by the way, can be associated with drivers (for example, if there is a conflict of drivers for different equipment). I recommend checking and updating drivers using special. utilities, or from the official website of the manufacturer of your equipment.
  3. Buy and start using an SSD. True, there are drawbacks: they are expensive, smaller than the HDD, Windows will need to be transferred from the HDD to the SSD so as not to lose their data.
  4. Lastly, pay attention to your antivirus. Often, when Windows starts, they begin to check all auto-loading programs, which often hang up a PC.

The following articles will help you:

After reinstalling Windows

It often happens that a computer starts to slow down after Windows has been reinstalled. If the old OS did not slow down so much and behaved differently, I recommend paying attention to a few of the following things.

After installing Windows, by default it starts searching for and downloading updates. This search and load - often have a strong impact on CPU utilization (which, of course, affects performance). The Windows Update service is responsible for this, and if you disable it, then Windows will stop updating.

How to disable updates (in Windows 10, the method applies to Windows 7, 8) -

Note: however, I do not recommend not updating the system at all. I am only a supporter of disabling auto-updating the system so that it does not interfere with work. But once or twice a month, in my opinion, it is worth turning on the service and manually checking for updates (when this will not interfere with your work).

As a rule, after reinstalling the OS, the old working drivers (time-tested ☺) are lost. In addition, Windows often installs its drivers during the installation process. And it’s not uncommon that they work very badly.

Therefore, I recommend that you go to the site of your laptop (computer) manufacturer, download drivers from there and install them manually. Or use special utilities for auto-updating and searching for drivers. I provide links below.

Large table with programs for updating drivers (top 20) -

Wrong Windows bit depth (Doesn’t see all memory)

If you have 4 GB of RAM (or more), and you installed the Windows 32 bit version, then it will only see 3 GB, which in turn will affect performance! In addition, some programs (video editors, graph editors, etc.) work better and faster on Windows 64 bit systems.

Problem in Windows (builds are evil)

If you installed all kinds of assemblies of Windows OS, the brakes might appear due to the quality of the assembly itself. The fact is that in it it is quite possible that some necessary services are disabled, something necessary is deleted, etc. And if such an assembly can work normally on one computer, then errors may occur on another computer, hangs, etc. At the end after all, no builder checks his product as much as the official developer does.

After some time (after 15-30 minutes)

High temperature, overheating

Personally, with this kind of thing, I would primarily recommend paying attention to temperature. The fact is that if the cooling system does not cope, the temperature begins to rise, when it reaches certain values - the computer starts to slow down.

How to find out the temperature of PC components? Very simple - use one of the utilities: Speccy, Aida, etc. The whole list in this article:

Note: in Aida (on the screen below), to see the temperature of the main components, you must open the "Computer / Sensors" section.

Next, see if there are any indicators that exceed the permissible values for your iron. Figures here can only be approximate, pay attention to the temperature if:

  • CPU: if exceeded the reading of 60 gr. C.,
  • for hard drive: more than 40 gr. C.,
  • for a video card: more than 60-65 gr. C.

By the way, I recommend that you read the article, the link to which is below (in it I examined in detail the issues of temperature).

How to find out the temperature of the processor, video card and hard drive, what is considered the norm? Ways to lower the temperature of computer / laptop components -

By the way, the temperature usually begins to rise due to:

  • clogged cooling system (dust (how to clean a PC from it - see below) poorly placed furniture covering the ventilation openings)
  • a stopped cooler (for example, it just might stop spinning due to departed contact),
  • during the summer hot season, when the temperature in the room and outside the window becomes much higher than in the rest of the time.

As a rule, with a significant dusting of the device, the temperature in it begins to rise (whether it is a regular system unit, or a laptop). Therefore, a couple of times a year it is advisable to clean the system unit from dust. How to do this is described in a separate article, a link to it below.

If you do not know how to dust your laptop, I recommend this entry:

Curved software (for example, a game). Gamers: Check out Steam

Very often, certain moments are slowed down in games due to developers ’deficiencies (for example, they did not optimize the game for the old line of video cards). As a result of this, in some games, when you see a fire (as an option) - the game screen seems to freeze (in other games - this can happen with water). The recommendation here is simple: try to see the official requirements of the game, thematic forums. Surely, if there is such a problem - the fans of this game have already “disassembled it by the bones”.

Also, at one time, such a popular service as Steam let its users down. The "steam.exe" process greatly suspended the system after several minutes after starting the game. Therefore, if you use this service - minimize the game and look at task manager (call buttons Ctrl + Shift + Esc ), is everything okay.

Video card stress test (if in games)

By the way, to evaluate whether everything is in order with the video card, if there are any problems with it, the stress test will help (by the way, it is recommended to carry it out if your games are slow on your PC). You can find out how to conduct it from one of my old articles, the link below.

Video card stress test - checking the video card for performance and stability -

Windows Updates

Also, a slow operation and freezes in games can cause a Windows update (for example, when it starts during your game). I recommend disabling automatic updates, and turning them on manually when they will not bother you. About how to do this:

Pay attention to such p2p-programs as uTorrent, StrongDС, etc. The fact is that if they start to hash files or if your users are actively downloading your files, your performance may decrease. Therefore, it is recommended before starting the game to close such applications (in cases of their braking).

In the game, when installing games

Brakes in games - this is probably one of the most frequent and pressing problems for many users. In general, for starters, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with one of my articles - why games slow down.

If the installation freezes or takes a very long time (exceeding reasonable limits) - I recommend checking the status of your hard drive -

High system requirements of the game

Many game lovers do not pay attention to system requirements. Indeed, all games always indicate the minimum and recommended system requirements for a comfortable game. If your computer does not meet the recommended requirements, it is not surprising that it slows down. However, you should not be discouraged by reading the articles below - you can somewhat speed up the operation of your machine.

Not native drivers

When installing a modern version of Windows (for example, Windows 10) - it also automatically installs drivers for all the hardware that it recognizes. In most cases, everything works fine, but sometimes the drivers are not installed correctly or start to conflict.

In general, I recommend downloading drivers for your video card from the manufacturer’s official website (or use special utilities for auto-updating drivers). The links are below.

Drivers not configured for performance

In the driver settings of different video cards (nVidia, AMD Radeon, IntelHD) - you can set the operating mode: either improve the quality of the picture, or set the maximum performance. Only due to such fine-tuning drivers - can any of the games be significantly accelerated. How this is done is described in my previous articles, the links to which are below.

Discrete graphics card does not work (for laptops with 2 cards)

Many modern laptops today are equipped with two video cards: built-in and discrete. When starting games, in most cases, a discrete card should be activated and start working. But this does not always happen.

When watching a video

When watching a video, the computer can also freeze as often: the picture will twitch, the sound will stutter, and all emotions from viewing will tend to zero.

This happens for various reasons, but in most cases the codecs, the player, and the weak PC are to blame. More on this below.

Important! Please note that this is a video that you watch on your computer. If we are talking about online video (from the services of YouTube, VK, Odnoklassniki) - then I recommend that you read this article:

Outdated (substandard) codecs

Very often, the video slows down due to poor-quality codecs. For a similar problem, I recommend first of all trying to remove your old codecs and install a new modern kit (for example, K-Lite Codec Pack. How to install it correctly, you can read in the article at the link below).

Too high quality video for your PC

Now on the Internet what kind of video is not there: both in the formats AVI, MP4, WMV, etc., and in the codecs that compressed them. Also, each video has a certain quality: 720p or 1080p (for example), so popular recently.

Please note that 1080p video requires twice as much power as a PC than, say, 720p. Not every old PC will pull such a video and be able to play it qualitatively (without jerking).

In this case, I can recommend the following:

  • try reinstalling codecs,
  • install a couple of other players and check how the video plays in them (10 best video players -,
  • close all other applications that load the PC before playing the video,
  • download the same video in lower quality (so that today, with the development of the Internet, a lot can be found very quickly. ☺).

Not optimized program / player

He said a few words already that different players when playing the same video can behave differently: one will load the processor to 100% and slow down, the other will play the video normally (it all depends on the algorithms and code, what the program is written with - what the resources it needs depend on. Programmers do write differently.).

Also check out one of my articles - Why video slows down on a computer / laptop:

Note!Players recommended to try on older computers: BS.Player, Media Player Classic, VLC media player, Splash HD Player Lite.

Discrete graphics card is not involved (for a laptop with 2 cards)

This problem was described in more detail, a little higher in the article (see about games).

When connected to the internet

If the computer starts to slow down when you connect to the Internet, the first thing I recommend paying attention to is the Windows Update service (it is she who is responsible for updating the system). If you open the task manager - CPU and memory loading comes from the process svchost.exe .

In this case, you need to disable auto-updates and enable them in the manual version, as necessary. How to do this - see this article:

Trojans, adware, viruses

The second thing I would recommend is to check your computer for viruses and adware. Often when Internet access is available, adware starts downloading and showing you ads. Because of this action - the computer often does not work stably, performance drops.

Note. When checking, I recommend using two anti-virus programs: for example, the classic Kaspersky Anti-Virus, and the AdwCleaner utility.

The network is loaded with programs devouring traffic

The next important point - look at task manager (call buttons Ctrl + Shift + Esc), are there programs that actively download information on the network. For example, various torrents, browsers, FTP programs, etc. Therefore, check if there are any applications that actively download something on the Internet when it appears (the same uTorrent may start hashing and double-checking files when Internet access appears) .

Slow Internet

If your online video or online game, for example, is slowing down, it is quite possible that the reason you need to look for is not on the computer itself, but on the network. If the speed of your channel is not enough, for example, for a certain game (or any other application), then there is nothing surprising in the freezes.

I recommend conducting a couple of tricky tests to check and find out your Internet speed. This article will tell you the link below.

When working in a browser

99.999% of PC / laptop users use browsers (even those who are not connected to the Internet). Perhaps that’s why there are a lot of complaints about browsers, they are constant and inexhaustible ☺.

If you are a user of the Chrome browser or its derivatives (and now it is one of the most popular), I recommend that you read the article below (some tips and tricks have been made and given to make your browser faster).

A large number of tabs

The more tabs open in the browser, the more memory they will require (and the CPU load will increase). Thus, when you open the nth number of tabs (depending on the characteristics of the PC and the type of Internet pages), your PC will noticeably slow down.

There are two recommendations: try not to open everything that is possible in the tabs, and try to use less resource-intensive browsers.

The abundance of advertising on the page.Browser infected with adware (virus)

On Internet pages where there is a lot of (I would even say an abundance) advertising - it’s not only not nice to be, but it also affects the responsiveness and performance of your PC. Moreover, I want to note that advertising on pages can be displayed even in those cases when you install special plugins to block it (this happens in cases where the browser is infected with adware. Recently, this is a real misfortune!).

How to remove ads in a browser and cure it from adware -

Old computer and new browser.

If you have a rather old computer - it is possible that it simply is not enough for comfortable work in a modern browser, which has dozens of plug-ins and add-ons. "goodies." On weak machines, I recommend trying browsers with minimal CPU and memory load. You can read about such browsers in one of my articles, the link below.

Slow Internet Speed

If your web pages load for a long time, first find out your real Internet speed (link below). I also recommend trying Opera and Yandex browser browsers in turbo mode (there is such an option that allows you to speed up page loading on slow Internet).

In addition, try disabling the graphics on the sites (flash animation, pictures, ads) - this will also speed up the loading of pages, reduce the load on the system as a whole.

Freezes, computer brakes when accessing files

The problem with the hard drive (bads)

If you want to copy a file from the hard disk and as a result it freezes, this is a rather alarming symptom (especially if your disk is unnaturally noisy: knocks, clicks, etc.).

I also recommend that you turn the drive’s condition if: your files start to disappear, they stop opening, the files copy speed is very slow, Windows flies, etc. All this may indicate problems with the mechanics, or, for example, that on the disk Bad blocks appeared.

This topic is quite extensive - therefore I will provide a link to the article below, which will help to understand and find out the status of your hard drive.

How to check the hard drive for errors and bad sectors (bad blocks). How to work with Victoria in DOS and Windows -

Small files and too many

If you copy a lot of small files (for example, picture collections) from one disk to another, then, as a rule, the copy speed drops and becomes very low. Many users are indignant (especially if you need to transfer tens of gigabytes of pictures).

Decision: in fact, everything is in order with your PC, when copying many small files - the computer always behaves this way. In this case, I’ll give one piece of advice - try packing all your small files into an archive (for example, in ZIP without compression - it is done very quickly!), And then copy the archive itself. Speed will increase at times!

Free 7-Zip archiver - create a ZIP archive without compression

The file is corrupted (not fully downloaded). There is no program to open the file

If your file is not fully downloaded (that is, it was downloaded, say, only 80%, instead of 100), then when you open it you will see some kind of error, or your computer will just “think over” and take half an minute, absolutely minute nothing will happen.

By the way, a similar picture happens if you do not have an application that can open a certain type of file. A tablet does not always immediately pop up asking you to choose a program to open a particular file.

To set and configure file associations, go to: Control Panel Programs Default Programs Select Default Programs . Next, select a specific program and set which file extensions it can open (screen below).

Default programs (file associations)

Antivirus blocks access to the file

And finally, check if your antivirus is blocking access to the file. Especially, if it concerns some games, game assistants, crack and other additions to various applications (which are distributed not by official publishers).

Almost any modern antivirus can be disabled for a certain time (an example is shown below).

Disabling Avast Antivirus (permanently)

I understand that the article turned out to be quite large, and checking all the reasons can take a long time (especially for a novice user). Nevertheless, I hope that someone will be able to save the article: money, time and nerves. So the time spent on it is not in vain!

For additions on the topic - in advance a big mercy.
