In the modern game system, extreme defenders play by combining two methods of protection - “zone” and “personal responsibility” for a specific opponent. Such a combined method significantly increases the capabilities of extreme defenders. It consisted of a widely used method of playing with personal responsibility for the player's ward (extreme striker), which the defender had to follow all the time. This method of defense allows enemy attackers to place defense in a way that is convenient for the implementation of tactical plans.
When playing according to the “zone” principle, the extreme defenders defend a certain zone regardless of which player invaded it. In this case, the defenders are evenly distributed over the zones.
However, in the zone method with particularly distinguishing abilities of the enemy, advancement to a place dangerous to their gates is possible.
Therefore, in recent times, a mixed, combined method of playing defense has been used - a combination of the zone principle with personal responsibility for the ward player.
The closer the game takes place, the clearer and more personal the defenders' personal responsibility for the actions of individual opponents becomes. Throughout the game, the opponents of the defenders can change.
The ability to correctly transfer from the zone principle of defense to personal responsibility in time, to “disassemble” all enemy players who are close to the goal, is the main thing in this combined way of playing extreme defenders.
Of course, the actions of the extreme defenders should be well coordinated with the actions of the central defender, midfielders and goalkeeper. Good consistency and allows the use of a maneuverable combined defense game.
In some cases, with the particularly outstanding qualities of one or another * opponent, the method of personal responsibility should be applied. For example, the right defender plays against a very strong left edge, relentlessly following him, neutralizing his actions, and the left defender with all the other partners plays combined.
In an attack approaching from the opposite end of the field, as in an attack in the immediate vicinity of the goal, the defender pulls closer to the goal in order to insure the gate against possible breakthroughs. In this (the case of the welterweight and extreme attackers of the enemy of his wing remain in the care of the midfielder.
When extending his midfielder to support the attack, the defender closes the winger, while also watching the welterweight.
Important is the position of the central defender, orienting other defenders, as well as the teamwork of midfielders with the central defender. The diagonal movement of the extreme defenders and the center of defense in separate episodes of the game is of great importance and requires the extreme defenders to have a good understanding of the game. An offensive defender must attack the offensive player so as not to allow him to go around inside the field. At the same time, the extreme defender tries to push the enemy to the side line, away from the gate.
Under no circumstances should defenders circle the opponent or pass the ball to each other in the immediate vicinity of their goal if there is a risk of losing the ball. They should send the ball to their player in the field as soon as possible with a blow, in difficult cases - away from the goal, and sometimes even beyond the sideline.
In particularly difficult situations, the defenders sometimes send the ball to the front line. This removes the danger and allows the players of their team to catch up and properly organize the defense.
Defenders, whenever the situation allows, should try to use each ball with the greatest benefit for their team.
The special position of the defenders, who are the last obstacle on the way to the goal, presents them with special requirements that are not quite usual for other players. Defenders should have great tenacity, play for sure, simply, without the slightest drawing, extra drops in the legs, taking the player out of the fight for a while. Defenders must be able to run fast, as they mainly play against the fastest running forward, and defenders often have to be located at a considerable distance from their goal. They must be tall, physically strong, be able to jump high. It is very important that the defenders are able to widely use and properly use shocks, play well with their heads, play accurately with both feet, especially when hitting flying balls, choose the right place and predict the direction of attack. Of great importance in the “three defenders” system are the long, accurate and unexpected passes of the ball to their attack.
